So I’m curious what you guys are doing to carry spare mags. I usually carry them in a spare pocket. Very far from ideal to have a double stack 45 mag in a pocket. Besides being slow to grab and not being able to keep anything else in there, they get absolutely filthy.

Any personal experiences with an iwb double mag holder that’s comfortable would be greatly appreciated. I’m tired of breaking apart mags to clean out lint and losing a pocket.

I usually carry a spare mag, sometimes even two just for the heck of it. Let’s be honest, if I have to conduct a reload the S has seriously H the fan! Yet I do like the piece of mind that having a spare mag generates, anything could happen (failure) which might necessitate a mag change.

I have two primary methods for carrying a spare mag or two.

1- If single (glock 9mm) mag it goes in my left pants pocket, vertically with the tip of the round facing inward. Far from ideal but it works, I also make sure nothing else is in that pocket.

2- I have used a Raven Concealment double mag carrier (OWB) with success. It’s very slim and stays close to the body (unlike the paddle type), while a best case scenario it can be a bit of overkill in some situations.

I have tried a blackhawk single mag carrier that clips onto the belt and hated it. It slid around (front to back) and just wasn’t tight, felt like it was more of a PITA than anything.

For mags in the pocket single stack 1911’s are great, very low profile. The downside is carrying a steel boat anchor (full size 1911) on one’s hip. I’ve tried it and hated it, that’s just me though.

The main reason I used to carry a spare mag was for malfunctions, until bands of looters started roaming my streets. Now I I carry two spare.

The pocket method I do now. I’m missing my pockets, and pocket lint is bad on the ammo and mag. I’m tired of taking them apart and cleaning.

I’ll look into that owb raven holster.

I love the 1911 mags, so slim and light. I do carry the 1911. Not often anymore but I used to carry it a lot. I think the it carrys ok due to it being so slim. I find the length of the barrel bad for sitting more of an issue than the weight.

Apparently, they are packed. Need to rabbit ear my pants before washing or something. I was really surprised how much lint I had jammed in one mag last time I took it apart. I honestly don’t know if it would have run, even through the glock yada yada. I had a hard time unloading it by hand.

Maybe I pocket carry more often than you, or maybe due to the dirty work environment I carry in. I don’t know, but it was bad.

Honest comment;

I carry a Springfield XD 45 tactical, 13 round mag with one in the pipe; Average gunfight in the US now is 2.25 rounds at around 12 feet. I have 2 mags in the truck, two in the “Bag” I keep with me at all times (GHB). But don’t “carry” any more than in the firearm. Call me stupid but if it takes more than 14 shots to get to my “bag” or truck I’m screwed. BUT god help em if I get to the truck, that’s when the real “firepower” comes into play.

FYI I do clean the mags everytime I clean the firearm, that seems to help.

Right, so in my thinking the spare mag is more about clearing a malfunction. Or if there’s a scuffle and the pistol is dropped or you hit someone with it, that can jostle the rounds in the mag and they won’t feed properly. It’s kind of a personal preference/training issue. In my head if I have 13 in the mag, they my not all fire. In that case I drop the mag insert a new one and rack the slide without hesitation. I don’t rack it and inspect it or anything else. Failure to fire for any reason results in a reload as that covers 3 of 4 reasons it didn’t fire. The fourth reason can’t be dealt with quickly so there is no remedial action for it.

Good job cleaning your mags, I’ve been wondering if I’m the only one doing that regularly.

Yes I have. I have seen some people use them too. They seem like a good solution from what I’ve seen. Best I can tell, the only downside is losing your pocket still. It does kind of break up the mag profile too, which I like.

You know what, I’m going to make one from scrap leather I have and try it out.
