If you find cattails in a survival situation, rejoice, as you are virtually guaranteed to make it. Cattails grow in wetlands which mean you have a constant water source and probable fish and waterfowl around for gathering, as well. they are also a very good food source.

Cattails grow typically in shallows, around marshes and ponds. They are recognizeable by the tops which resemble a hot dog. You can find somehting edible on these plants, pretty much yuear round. the roots are edible year round, carrying with it much the same nutrients as potatoes. They can also be dried and ground to make flour. The sprng shoots can be peeled and either eaten raw or used as filler in stews or soups. I have had these boiled shoots in stews before and they remind me of asparagus.

The heads can also be eaten, they are best if boiled like corn on the cob. They have their own taste but it is not bad.

Apart from food, cattail stalks and fibers can be used for a numberof things, weaving them together for use in a shelter, for sleeping mats, as well as the dried stalks making a good source of fuel for a fire.

I knew you could eat the roots, but I did NOT know you could eat the heads! Interesting! Any idea how many calories one head would have?

you can ingest enough to live on, if it comes to it, as far as actual calorie content, I cant tell you that. I do know that there are enough nutrients in it to keep you going, should it come to that. It will give you a good supplemental source of plant life in your diet.

Remember, too, Cattails grow in wetlands, there should be a number of other food options in the area, as well.

As a vegetarian, my options are more limited than other people’s. That’s why I’m so interested in this foraging stuff you’ve been talking about.

I also heard that cattails are a great way to treat water (on a large scale level, rather than a personal level), as they pull lots of bad things out of the water. Have you heard anything about that, J? And if that’s true, I wonder if that means you have to be really careful about the quality of water they’re growing in?

I have not heard anything about them filtering anything out of the water, personally, that does not mean it isnt true, though. As far as water quality….running water is best, in place wherre water is still or stagnant, it is usually a good practce to dig a seep hole and drink the water that seeps into it. the ground will provide some filtration.
