A chat with a *REAL* Prepper

Recently my friend made the 4 hour trek to come hang out with me for the weekend.  We expended quite a bit a ammunition, talked about preps, 3-5 year plans and tipped back a few adult beverages.  I found ironic that when the topic of current events came up, he was rather clueless.  I brought up various topics: Ebola, riots in Missouri, state of the economy.  He was rather impartial and uniformed with respect to all of that.  “Have you heard about” was often followed by “no I haven’t.”

Before I continue I’ll paint a picture of my friend.  Almost 100 acres to call his own and completely self sufficient.  Skills and family are on his side, he grew up on a farm living the hard life and knows the deal.  Headlines in the news do not concern him and he’d much rather discuss his latest purchase at the local farm supply store or the latest modification to his tractor.  He has enough gear in his pickup to survive the apocalypse for weeks on end if caught on the road.  He can hunt, fish, grow food, dehydrate, can, and has quite a few professional skills of his own. That’s what I’m talking about.

I couldn’t help but envy his position when hanging out for those few days.  As we stood in my back yard (with multiple neighbors in view) he commented: “I can see why you want to move out to the country.”  Indeed my friend, life in the ‘burbs is no life for me or my family.

It’s good to have friends like these.  Even if T-SHTF never happens they are an amazing example of how true self sufficiency can be liberating.  I’d be lying if I stated that I was not jealous.  Soon enough…

It’s funny, the guy I work with lives about an hour out of the city and he’s been asking me all these isis questions. Did you know they’ve taken over this, and they are coming here and going there and doing this and that? I’m on the no to all, because I’m watching my neighborhood so close.

You pay attention to what affects you.

I would like to be out in the quiet full time. It would be nice.
