Quite often I’ll post a review and go through all sorts of criteria before giving you a bottom line assessment of said item. I’ll just cut right to the chase with this one and state that this little clamplight lantern is awesome, something definitely worth owning whether spending time camping with family or for use during a power outage at home. I have been very impressed with the Blackfire Clamplight Lantern and have already used it a few times (my wife hates the strobe feature). I plan on using it here soon when out in the bush with my family camping and have it staged for emergencies here at mi casa. It’s so versatile and has quite a few cool features, and when priced out at less than $40 (a fraction of the cost of a Surefire) it really is hard to beat.
Initial Impressions
Upon receiving this lantern in the mail three thoughts crossed my mind:
1- This thing is super cool.
2- No way I’m packing this in my Bugout Bag as it is too large.
3- Battery Life indicator: super cool (takes 3 AA batteries).
Each tool in your kit has a specific purpose and just because it can’t fit in a BOB doesn’t make it junk. The size (not weight) of the Blackfire Clamplight Lantern made it somewhat cumbersome for a BOB but for other applications it looked to be perfect. Emergency lighting during a power outage be it in lantern form or flashlight, and of course camping with family (or just sitting out on the deck or patio).
Configurations
The lantern has several configurations, I took a few pictures for show and tell purposes. I should note that when switching between configurations you don’t get the feeling that you are dealing with a cheap piece of plastic that could snap or fall to pieces at any moment, everything seems to be super sturdy.
Thoughts on Usage
I have two primary purposes for this light.
1- Emergency lighting in the event of a power outage. The lantern will be great for lighting up a large room at night and the ability to switch quickly to a flashlight is super slick. I currently have the lantern hanging in a cleaning closet ready to go in case the lights go out.
2- Camping with the family. Setting up and tearing down in the dark will be much easier with a light like this, of course if T-SHTF white light won’t be an option but for now this light will serve us well.
Bottom Line
The Blackfire Clamplight Lantern is a great piece of equipment. Its multiple configurations, durability, quality construction and cool features like battery life indicator make it a worthwhile investment. Check out this video for more details.
