I am a member of several UK prepping forums and you get one of two different answers to the question of health, either you get the youngsters who say they will bug out carrying a HUGE pack of gear on their back and they say they will run for 25 miles with that!! or you get the older guys who cant even walk to the corner shop for a newspaper. although I am older than most people on the UK forums, I am retired, I’m a lot healthier than people I know in their 40s and 50s, wife and I lost nearly 3 stones(british weight measurement: about 40 Lbs) by just cutting out biscuits and pastry and exercising more, we recently took up cycling and we get out with the dog(Cairn terrier bitch) and walk several miles a day with her. mother in law was housebound and “off her feet” as we say over here , in the last few years before her death, and I don’t want to end up like that.
June 22, 2014 at 2:11 AM #9039BrandonGuestThat’s great, Bigpaul! And I agree, I wouldn’t want to end up “off my feet”, either.
I love cycling and walking. Unfortunately, there’s no place to go, where I’m at. I’m in a little subdivision, with not much else around. And I don’t like walking/riding on highways.
As far as some people planning to carry tons of gear, I think that’s a common problem. Unfortunately, you just can’t take everything you’d like to have, on your back.
June 22, 2014 at 1:33 PM #9049bigpaulGuestI’m lucky , I live in the middle of Devon county, a rural farming community and I can be out in the countryside within a couple of minutes of walking out of my front door, to british preppers I have bugged out already compared to most. I’m in the north of the county-most of the population live in the far south of the county near the coast.
June 22, 2014 at 2:35 PM #9050BrandonGuestThat sounds great! I wish I lived in the English countryside! I live in a suburb of Houston. I’m hoping to get the heck out Texas, though, soon.
June 22, 2014 at 2:46 PM #9051JGuestone thing I have learned about having a pup is you get LOTS of walking in if you dont want them going mental in the house 🙂
Weather is conducive to bike to work for me now so am getting a bit of that in, as well.
June 23, 2014 at 3:20 AM #9066bigpaulGuestI lived in a small south west city(pop 250,000) for 43 years but managed(finally) to get out 15 years ago, moved to a medium! sized town(8,800) where we lived for 10 years and finally come home to Devon 5 years ago and moved to the edge of a small market town(Parish population 1,300). surrounded by fields of sheep-this is hill farming country, to any sheeple living in a british city this is the “middle of nowhere”!!!
June 23, 2014 at 5:36 PM #9070BrandonGuestJ,
That’s cool getting to bike to work! I really need to get my bike fixed. Then I could occasionally throw it in the back of the truck, and drive somewhere where it’s nicer to ride. It’s always good when you get exercise doing something you enjoy.
Bigpaul,
That sounds like a dream, where you live! I like big cities and small towns (with decent scenery). Ideally, I’d like to live in a nice small town, about an hour from a big city. But from your description, I’d love to live where you’re at!
June 24, 2014 at 6:39 AM #9076bigpaulGuestwe aren’t actually in the town, we are on the opposite side to the town, separated by the river, about 1 mile out near the parish border.
June 24, 2014 at 12:46 PM #9078BrandonGuestNot only does that sound like a really nice place to live, it sounds like a great place to be, if ever the SHTF.
June 25, 2014 at 8:13 AM #9095bigpaulGuestits certainly a lot better than most places I’ve lived before.
