A couple of things you must know before reading this rant:
1- I don’t have a twitter or facebook account.
2- I generally believe they are a waste of time and ridiculously stupid, although I do have a widget which allows people who read my articles to link to their social media accounts (crazy double standard I know).
3- I have a handful of acquaintances and very FEW friends. I could care less about someone I once knew in high school or worked with, if they had a baby or went on vacation and posted pictures of it.
So let’s go. Does someone having a social media account and all of those fake friends mean they are a better person than me? Hardly. As stated there are people I’ve once worked with or knew, and I could honestly care less about what is going on in their life. Does that make me a bad person? Nope. Does the person with a social media account who hits “like” and takes 10 seconds to comment on some stupid picture while standing in line at Charbucks make them a better friend? Laughable.
This is the ridiculousness of it all. These social media-ites purport to have friends. What is the definition of a true friend?
– Would you lend them $100 without question and never ask for it back?
– Would you sacrifice a weekend to help them move?
– Would you let them stay at your home for days or weeks without getting pissed off?
– Would you call off of work in order to be with them in a time of need?
– Would you sell something of yours in order to raise money to support a cause of theirs?
– Would you give them the key to your home, car without question?
– Do you have more in common with them than the period in life you spent interacting with them?
To me the above definitions fit that of a friend. Not some garbage social media acquaintance who one shares pictures and witty comments with. People come and people go in life, doesn’t mean I need to keep tabs on them or share my current situation with them. In short, not true friends and as such…oh well.
FWIW, I don’t keep tabs on relatives outside of immediate family either.

October 9, 2014 at 12:08 AM #11683Capt. Mac.GuestPJ…
Would you be my friend?
( I could use 100 bucks and I may be moving to “The Bonnie Jean” soon.)
Its all crap. Madison Ave. tells us we need “likes” How cool you will be if you can text 24/7
Now I have to admit, that from a business stand point, some social media might make for good free advertising. But on a personal level? I have over 5,000 past students, a few friends and family. They all have my email.
GOOD post

October 9, 2014 at 1:38 AM #11689Echo5CharlieGuestThat’s hilarious… Pigeons post shtf. That’s the original tweet right.
I don’t think all those social media websites are for keeping up with friends. It’s more about the whole “look at me!”
October 9, 2014 at 7:24 AM #11706Capt. Mac.GuestWell… Echo… Thank You.
Now that I think about what you just said.
It may be “Look at me in “this time frame”My parents thought electric Rock&Roll was the devil reincarnate. I think Rap music is about time the same.
In my day; if you wanted to get noticed, you beat the S*** out of some one, was a sports jock, or ate 2 hits of LSD on the way to school. I wonder what my great-grand father (immigrant from Prussia) would have thought of Elvis or face book?
TO PJ………..So folks post pictures now to get noticed. . The worst part is they don’t have be healthy (or drug resistant). Just thumb enriched.
As I tried to state above. Its Madison Ave. that I despise the most. Each year they tell me what I MUST want. This year its TWITFACE. I shutter to think of the marrow.
I’ll keep my pigeons. TYVM.
CM
PS….. I never have beat the S*** out of anyone, and am/was Jock and Drug-less.
