As some of you may or may not know, I take a trip to the UK about once a year to visit friends over there and also have a bit of escape time. The wife doesn’t mind, I suspect she enjoys a few weeks of not having me underfoot 🙂

I was talking to some of my friends over there about the trip and we got on the subject of outdoors activities since I am going over in the summer this year. One of them is an experienced backpacker, having traveled through Asia on several occaisions for several months at a time. We have decided on taking a backpacking trip through the Scottish Highlands.

I figure this will be a great chance to test some of my bugout gear, although FAA regulations do restrict a good bit of it. For example, Sterno is not allowed on a plane, even in luggage, nor is any type of fuel or stove, unless said stove is brand new in the box. Even MREs are not allowed because of the warming packets. I dont mind picking up a few thigns there but cost is an issue since I won’t be able it bring it back.

I figured to solicit some input from you guys as to equipment and such and will make sure to write up an after action post as to experiences on this trip.

Trip conditions I have thought of so far:

    – Approximately 4 day trip
    – terrain is mountainous, wet and probably around 40-70 degrees.
    – I want to keep pack weight to about 35#, if possible, as we will be doing some traveling over fairly rough terrain, at times.

I have a most of the necessities. I wouldn’t mind recommendations on a fairly cheap and effective backpacker stove and maybe some lightweight rain gear.

Anything else that comes to mind, feel free to recommend, also.

I know we have a few members form the UK, so please feel free to add in brand names you are familiar with that work well and a good outdoor supply store.

Am really looking forward to this trip, all, your input and insight is greatly appreciated!

I’d be interested in some gear to help you stay dry, especially considering it’s supposed to be very wet. Also fire starting equipment and various food sources (packaged meals).

Good luck and keep us posted!

Yeah, staying dry is going to be a challenge. Some of the equipment I have to take is a Sawyer mini water filter, a Pirmus backpacker stove, the UV Paqlite kit you reviewed and a couple of different types of socks. Firestarter stuff and all I will have to get there, as most are not transportable by plane.

Will review how things work for me and post it here, probably mid August when I get back.
